MY MISSION STATEMENT [a work in progress]


when i first started taking pictures i was very careful, obsessed really, to taking a perfect picture. at school i was always occupied with technical precision and knowledge.

now it's the opposite. when i make a picture, i try to remember to put the imperfections in.

a good photographer knows that exposure, focus, the best equipment, possibly even light, don't make a good picture. it's the presence of the photographer. it's the way he/she understands the moment and the context and the setting.

a good photo shouldn't just represent a moment, it should tell a story.

therein lies the beauty of a photograph. its story. and the magical quality of the memories it engages and the emotions it sparks.

a photographer is a storyteller, and we communicate in a very universal visual language. i want to represent what we miss when we blink, or what we see in our minds when we remember the moment.

i promise to capture who people are and what they mean to me. to record what lies in the moments between shutter clicks. to document what's in the details and shadows of my (willing) subjects.

i want the mind's eye to be my lens. i want to create a love letter to my life.

9 THINGS ABOUT ME















in january 2006 i started a very personal project called "9 things about me".

it came out of my love for my dad's old dymoe label gun, and my fascination with self portraits. originally i only planned to do "stubborn" as a single self portrait, but the other 8 labels just sort of came out of the machine on their own.

anyway, so i decided to take it as a chance to put my newly acquired DSLR through its paces.

this project really underlines an ongoing theme in my work about literal and figurative labels and how personal and public perception of who we are can clash and even be absurd.

the labels themselves are fairly general qualities that i find really do "label" who i am, but the challenge was to put the words into context with my own self image. the challenge was taking the photos entirely alone, and to label a part of my body i thought would be appropriate.
